ONline Safety
The internet is such an integral part of children's lives these days. It opens up so many educational and social opportunities, giving them access to, quite literally, a world of information and experiences.
Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone, children and young people are increasingly accessing the internet whenever they can and wherever they are.
As you would protect your child in the real world, you will want to make sure that they are safe whatever they are doing. Like learning to cross the road, online safety skills are skills for life. If your child understands the risks and can make sensible and informed choices online, they can get the most from the internet and stay safe whilst doing so – particularly from those people who might seek them out to harm them.
So, how can you protect your child online?
It is important for you to understand the internet and understand what the risks are, there are a number of things you can do that will make your child safer online. Please see the links below for further information:

What Parent/Carers Need to Know
February 2021
Tuesday 9th February ’21 is Safer Internet Day and this year Kirklees Safeguarding Team have been working hard to support it.
- They have created a video- Kids educating kids https://youtu.be/tXE8PXbsR4U, which hope will be shared on the 9th Feb with the 750 primary schools we have across WY. The children involved will be delivering online safety messages in line with SID’21 theme.
- Also on the day will be a presentation delivered by a PCSO- Cyber officers. PCSO Luke Carson is part of a ring fenced team, educating kids, teachers and parents around online safety messages. The presentation will be delivered at 10.30am on the 9th Feb and all of the 750 primary schools across WY will be invited to join (below is a picture of SID, within that picture is the link to join the presentation).
- And then to capture the audience of parents/carers, they are conducting a Facebook Live at 1pm for 30 mins, on the day. Where three officers who have been trained by the NSPCC to deliver these types of messages from SID to parents/carers, will be on hand for a Q&A session as well as delivering some messages in line with the current SID’21 theme - https://www.facebook.com/westyorkshirepolice.
- We have developed promotional YouTube videos to promote the Facebook Live we are conducting to support SID’21 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM391loX73E&feature=youtu.be.
The picture below contains a link (hover over it, push Ctrl and then left click), to join an online presentation being delivered by a PCSO, which will be aimed at Primary aged school children, to educate them around online safety messages, in-line with SID’21.
